What is a Vicar?

A vicar is a man studying to become a pastor.  In The Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod a man who wishes to be a pastor must complete four years of college and then attend one of our two seminaries (Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO and Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN) for four additional years.  The first two years are spent at the seminary learning the biblical languages (Greek and Hebrew), theology, church history, and practical pastoral items.  The third year is the "vicar" year.  During this year the student works full-time in a congregation, receiving first-hand experience in the life and ministry of a parish pastor.  Under the supervision of the congregation's pastor the vicar writes and preaches sermons, teaches Bible classes, visits the sick and house-bound, attends meetings, and so forth.  After his year of vicarage, he returns to the seminary for a fourth and final year of study, after which he is certified by the seminary, ordained by the church, and called by a congregation to serve as their pastor. For a span of 20 years (1992-2012) our congregation was involved in the vicarage program.  Listed above are those 20 men who served their year of vicarage here.
